What Bridal Trends 2020

If you’re a 2020 bride, you probably have been saving pictures as references to what your dream wedding should look like. But when it comes to your outfit, you obviously want to opt for something that’s on-trend but still a classic. We asked some of India’s biggest bridal designers on what trends will be big next year. Start shopping soon!

Tarun Tahiliani

“The way I look at it, there are only two strong trends always in bridal couture and this is not something that changes from year to year. There is always a very sophisticated pastel but with a soft vintage look. So whether it is the pale pink, the blush, the many shades of gold, aqua, and of course ivory which is always spectacular on every skin, it will continue as one very strong trend and the other side of the spectrum is the traditional red emanating from the sindoor which is a symbolic culmination of the marriage. Within the reds, colors have tended to get much brighter and more vibrant as opposed to the dark maroons and burgundies that were on-trend a couple of years back.”
And if you’re looking for something that you can dance the night away in, Tarun has the solution

“In terms of cuts and design, we started by a lot of R&D on cholis and structured drapes. I think going forward from this year literally with the exception of 1 outfit in the couture collection, everything is weightless and light, and for me that has been and will continue to be a primary focus.”

Anjul Bhandari

“The biggest bridal trends this year and the upcoming year are vibrant colors with heavy blouses. Traditional embroideries like Chikankari, zardozi, and mirror work are huge.

The most sought after fabrics being organza, silk, and Georgette. The lightness of versatile Chikankari will be bridal and regal.” If you’re wondering what embroidery you want on your lehenga, Anjul recommends, “Mukaish – it also getting a lot of attention now with its ability to make an ensemble look heavy instantly and with the ability to look beautiful in darker and jewel-tone colors. Our colors also look beautiful with most kinds of bridal jewelry like diamonds, polki, meenakari, and jadau which are very popular.”

Shriya Som

Hyderabad designer Shriya who is known for her dreamy ensembles says, “For Spring Summer 2020, the defining theme is effortless sophistication. Easier silhouettes, Indian summer-friendly fabrics in organzas, Georgettes, lightweight silks & cotton and tones that can range from soft vintage pastels to bold variations of jewel tones in Fuschia, aubergine, deep coral and red. Printed and embroidered florals will vie with soft geometry and abstracts. Textures like lace and crochet, lighter drapes and fabric manipulation will find new expression in modern Indian wedding wear as well.”

Falguni & Shane Peacock

Counting Beyonce and Disha Patani as fans, you can expect glitzy glamour from Falguni & Shane. The trends they foresee are, “Big ball gown lehengas and trail lehengas will be very much in trend. Apart from those, it is the floor-length anarkalis and drape sarees that will be quite in; given for how hassle-free they are to carry for the new bride. On the color front, silver, gold, metallic, and grey will be big. We are also seeing a surge in clients opting for multicolored lehengas in our signature elements such as ruffles, feathers, sequins, etc.”

K Radharaman of Advaya from the House Of Angadi

“The coming year of 2020, we see brides slowly moving towards deep colors instead of the pastel colors (that were ruling the roost for the most part of 2019) for their trousseau. Though there will be a pastel palette hangover for 2020 summer brides, by mid-year, all the traditional colors such as gold, red, pink, yellow, and green will be back with a bang.” If you’re wondering what new silhouettes brides will opt for, K Radharaman says, “Brides will be seen pairing their sarees with long overlays for a more glamorous look. Many brides will also cinch the waist with belts to give an hourglass shape. While gold belts are classic and evergreen, you also see non-traditional belts (also corset belts) coming into the picture, upping the style quotient.”
